Every teacher enters the profession with a dream, to be the person who changes a child’s life, who sees potential where others see problems, who becomes the teacher a student never forgets. Patricia Polacco’s “Thank You, Mr. Falker” is the perfect vehicle to help your students understand exactly what this sacred relationship between teacher and student can become.

This is a great back-to-school book that doubles as a manifesto for believing in a child’s potential. Through Polacco’s own story of struggling with dyslexia and finding salvation through one extraordinary teacher’s unwavering faith in her potential, students will discover what it truly means to have a teacher who refuses to give up on them.

More importantly, this book helps students understand their role in this partnership. They’ll see that the teacher-student relationship is about trust, vulnerability, growth, and the magical transformation that happens when someone believes in you more than you believe in yourself.

A Love Letter to the Teaching Profession

At its heart, “Thank You, Mr. Falker” is the ultimate love letter to teachers and the perfect way to help students understand the profound relationship they’re about to build with you. Through Trisha’s story, students witness what happens when a teacher truly sees them, believes in them, and refuses to let them fail.

The story follows young Trisha, who adores stories and art but finds reading an impossible puzzle. Letters dance and blur on the page, and her struggles become fodder for classmates who call her “dumb” and leave her feeling invisible and defeated. She begins to believe she might actually be stupid.

Then Mr. Falker enters her life in fifth grade. Not just as an instructor, but as a champion. He sees past her struggles to recognize her brilliance. He protects her from bullies. He stays after school to work with her personally. He celebrates her artistic talents while patiently unlocking her reading potential. Most importantly, he believes in her when she can’t believe in herself.

What makes this story extraordinary is its authenticity. This is Patricia Polacco’s real journey from a struggling, ashamed child to a celebrated author. Your students will see that teachers don’t just teach subjects; they teach children to believe in themselves. They witness the sacred trust between teacher and student, and understand that learning requires vulnerability, courage, and faith in the relationship.

Why This Book Is Essential for Understanding the Teacher-Student Bond

It Shows Students What It Means to Be Truly Seen

When you read this book aloud, you’re essentially saying to your students: “This is what I want our relationship to look like. I want to be the teacher who sees your unique gifts, who doesn’t give up when you struggle, who celebrates your strengths while helping you grow.” Students learn that the teacher-student relationship is built on mutual respect, trust, and the shared belief that every child has something special to offer.

It Demonstrates the Power of Vulnerability in Learning

Trisha’s journey shows students that admitting you need help isn’t weakness. The story helps students understand that their teacher is their partner in learning, not their judge. When Mr. Falker works patiently with Trisha after school, students see what it looks like to trust your teacher with your struggles and to accept help with dignity.

It Reveals How Teachers Protect and Advocate

One of the most powerful moments in the book occurs when Mr. Falker stands up to the bullies who torment Trisha. Students learn that teachers are protectors, advocates, and champions. This helps students understand that they can turn to their teacher not just for academic support, but for emotional safety and guidance.

It Shows the Joy of Shared Success

The moment when Trisha finally reads fluently is triumphant not just for her, but for Mr. Falker too. Students witness how teachers genuinely celebrate their victories, how their success becomes their teacher’s success. This helps children understand that their growth and achievements matter deeply to the adults who teach them.

It Models What Happens When Someone Believes in You

Perhaps most importantly, the story shows students what it feels like to have someone believe in you more than you believe in yourself. Mr. Falker never doubted Trisha’s potential, even when she doubted herself. This teaches students to trust their teacher’s vision of who they can become, even when they can’t see it themselves.

Bringing the Story to Life in Your Classroom

One of the book’s most memorable moments involves Trisha’s grandfather drizzling honey on a book cover, explaining that knowledge is sweet like honey, but “you have to chase it through the pages of a book.”

Create your own classroom ritual by bringing a jar of honey to show students while discussing this beautiful metaphor. Have students observe the honey’s golden color and thick, flowing texture as you explain how knowledge, like honey, is something precious that requires effort to obtain. Then have students write or illustrate what knowledge they want to “chase” this year, perhaps designing their own “honey jar” labels with their learning goals inside. This activity creates anticipation for learning while connecting to the story’s central message about the sweetness of discovery.

These questions help students reflect on their own relationship with learning and with you as their teacher:

What does it mean when a teacher never gives up on a student?

How do you think it felt for Mr. Falker when Trisha finally learned to read successfully?

Creative Response Activities

Personal Reflection Writing That Builds Connection:

What does it mean to you to have a teacher who never gives up on you?

Creating Your Own Teacher-Student Promises: After reading the story, work with students to create mutual promises. Students might promise to trust you with their struggles, to ask for help when they need it, and to celebrate each other’s growth. You might promise to see each student’s unique gifts, to believe in their potential, and to never give up on them.

The “Mr. Falker Moments” Gallery: Invite students to share or draw pictures of times when a teacher, parent, or other adult showed they believed in them. Create a classroom display celebrating these moments, showing students that believing in each other is a powerful tradition they’re now part of.

Fostering Creative Thinking Through the Story

“Thank You, Mr. Falker” provides an excellent foundation for developing the four cornerstones of creative thinking: fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. These skills help students become innovative problem-solvers and imaginative thinkers.

Fluency: Generating Multiple Ideas

Challenge students to brainstorm extensively: “List every way Mr. Falker helped Trisha believe in herself.” Push them beyond obvious answers to discover subtle moments of encouragement, reaching for 15-20 examples.

Flexibility: Shifting Perspectives

Encourage multi-angle thinking: “Imagine three completely different ways Trisha’s classmates could have supported her: one using words, one using actions, and one using something creative.” This develops empathy while practicing flexible thinking.

Originality: Creating Unique Solutions

Spark innovative ideas: “Invent a brand-new way a teacher could help a struggling student feel smart and confident, something nobody has tried before.” Students might envision teaching through music, creating magical reading spaces, or developing entirely new support systems.

Elaboration: Adding Rich Details

Deepen understanding through extension: “Take the honey metaphor and explain it in your own words, then transform it into a detailed story, poem, or comic strip showing someone chasing knowledge like a bee.” This builds both comprehension and creative expression.

Practical Implementation Tips

Reading Level Considerations: While perfect for grades K-5, adjust your approach based on your students’ needs. Younger children may need frequent pauses for explanation, while older students can handle deeper analysis and discussion.

Time Investment: Plan for 10-15 minutes of reading time plus 20-30 minutes for activities and discussion. This investment pays dividends in classroom culture throughout the year.

Cross-Curricular Connections: Use the story to launch units on biography, perseverance, friendship, or even the science of how we learn. The rich themes support multiple subject areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mr. Falker a real person? Yes! George Felker was Patricia Polacco’s actual fifth-grade teacher. The book honors his life-changing impact on her education and future.

What’s the main takeaway for students? That everyone learns differently, success comes through support and perseverance, and kindness has the power to transform lives.

How does this book work with different grade levels? The universal themes of struggle, support, and triumph resonate across age groups. Younger students connect emotionally, while older students can analyze the deeper messages about learning differences and resilience.

The Sacred Trust Between Teacher and Student

“Thank You, Mr. Falker” establishes the sacred foundation upon which all meaningful learning occurs: the relationship between teacher and student. It shows students that you’re not just someone who will give them assignments and grades, but someone who will see their potential, protect their dignity, and celebrate their growth.

By choosing this book for your back-to-school read aloud, you’re making a profound statement about the kind of teacher you intend to be. You’re telling your students that in your classroom, they will be seen, valued, and believed in. You’re showing them that learning is not a solitary struggle, but a partnership built on trust, patience, and mutual respect.

Most importantly, you’re helping them understand that the teacher-student relationship is one of the most powerful forces in their educational journey. Just as Mr. Falker transformed Trisha’s life by believing in her potential, you have the power to change your students’ lives by showing them what they’re capable of becoming.

So as you prepare for those crucial first days, remember that you’re not just teaching curriculum—you’re building relationships that will last a lifetime. Open the book, share the story, and let your students discover that they have found their own Mr. Falker in you.

Carr traces the origins of writing, highlighting early systems like scriptura continua that demanded intense mental effort. He discusses the transition to more efficient reading with spaces between words and word order conventions. Carr also explores how these changes influenced the human brain, developing sustained attention and the “literary brain.” He mentions the liberation of writers through advanced writing technologies, fostering personal and adventurous literature. The chapter connects historical developments to the Gutenberg press, democratizing book access and boosting literacy. He argues that writing technology deepened human consciousness and basically shaped our collective identity.

We cannot go back to the lost oral world, any more than we can turn the clock back to a time before the clock existed. “Writing and print and the computer,” writes Walter Ong, “are all ways of technologizing the word” and once technologized, the word cannot be de-technologized.

This quote is like alarm bells going off in my mind, “Once technologized, the word cannot be de-technologized,” when I think about how it applies to AI. AI is transforming communication and it will leave a lasting digital footprint. Ethical AI use and its cultural impact require careful consideration. AI’s role in shaping the future society underscores the irreversible impact of technology on language, culture and collective identity.

Reflect on how the internet has already transformed the way we think, access information, and communicate. Considering the rise of AI, how do you envision our brains evolving in response to new technologies and their influence on our cognitive processes?

He contrasts Turing’s early machine with the modern Internet, highlighting its speed and digitization of media, reducing computing costs since the 1960s.

Carr emphasizes the Internet’s bi-directionality, enabling user-generated content alongside consumption, leading to increased online time without replacing screen time. The chapter notes the decline of print media in favor of digital formats, rendering old technologies obsolete.

So, I wonder…

Is the internet a tool we control or a force that shapes us? This chapter challenges us to critically assess how our relationship with technology influences our thinking patterns.

Let’s talk about “Bi-Directionality.”

Traditional forms of reading like newspapers, television, and radio involve one-way content flow whereas the internet allows us to interact with the message instantly like messaging, creating content about the content, creating a dynamic, interactive, and democratic media landscape. The ability to instantly message, create content in response to existing content, and engage with a global audience has given rise to a dynamic, interactive, and democratic media space. What’s even more exciting is the role that AI is playing in this transformation. AI empowers ALL of us to generate videos, images, and texts, opening up new avenues for creative expression and divergent thinking. It can even take a difficult concept you are struggling with and explain it in a way you need to understand it, and it doesn’t get tired, it will give you examples and explain until you have your aha.

This democratization of information systems (media) is incredibly powerful. It levels the playing field – and allows everyone to have their voices heard, share their perspectives, and contribute to a more diverse and inclusive discourse. It’s a reminder of the incredible potential that technology holds when harnessed for the greater good. Knowing what we know about these possibilities, it’s an exciting time to be part of this evolving media landscape, where the boundaries between creators and consumers continue to blur, ushering in an era of boundless creativity and connectivity.

What do you think?

Carr notes the rise of e-readers. He discusses a trend of “groupiness” in writing and reading driven by online engagement which potentially marginalizes literary readers due to click bait, or writing for search engines instead of depth. Carr reflects on historical predictions about technology replacing books and questions the impact of the internet on traditional reading habits. This chapter highlights the complex shift in reading habits and intellectual culture due to digitization.

All I can really think about is in what ways might we preserve the depth and richness of literary experiences? What can we really do about this?

Hopefully as we read on we can get more information on this.

At this point in the book, What are questions that you are having?

Did you do the cognitive experiment from last week?

Did you find that online reading is convenient but filled with distractions, which encourages skimming and fragmented reading. Where as physical books offer a focused, immersive experience, promoting sustained concentration, deeper engagement, and a stronger connection between reader and text?

“The medium is the message” means that how we communicate or the tools we use to share information have a big impact on what we say and how we act. It’s not just about the words or content; it’s about the way we deliver those words. Different communication tools, like books, TV, or the internet, change how we think and behave because they affect how we experience information. So, the way we say something can be just as important as what we’re saying.

It underscores the need for mindful online use and a balance between digital and offline activities to preserve cognitive abilities. The last line of this chapter hit hard “I missed my old brain.”

It’s all about how our brain connections get stronger, and this supports Carr’s argument that tools can change how our brains work.

We’re here to enhance your professional development by exploring how the internet affects our thinking. Our focus is on improving critical and creative thinking skills, which you can apply in your classroom to benefit your students academically and emotionally.

In this digital age, we’re constantly bombarded with stimuli from various digital platforms, which has led to a shift in our cognitive processes. Carr argues that our reliance on the Internet and its efficiency-focused, multitasking demands are compromising our ability to engage in deep, reflective thinking.
