Teach Students How to Use AI in the Classroom the Right Way This Back-to-School Season

We all see it already.

This year’s students are showing up to our classrooms with ChatGPT already in their pockets, literally or figuratively.

They’re using it to write essays, to solve problems, to find answers faster than we can hand out the assignment sheet.
And yet… they don’t really understand it.

They trust it too much.
They assume it’s right.
They copy and paste its answers without question.
Some can’t even tell when it’s being biased or just completely wrong.

Meanwhile, we as teachers are left trying to keep up.
We’re policing plagiarism, fielding awkward questions, and watching their creativity shrink as they rely more and more on a chatbot to think for them.

But here’s the thing.
AI isn’t the enemy.
And banning it won’t fix the problem.

If we want our students to succeed in a world where AI is everywhere, we have to teach them how to work with it responsibly, creatively, and critically.

That’s why the beginning of the school year is the perfect time to set the tone.

Set Expectations Early and Teach the Skills They Actually Need

When we don’t explicitly teach students how to use AI well, they default to using it poorly.
They treat it like a cheat code instead of a collaboration partner.

This year, I wanted to make sure my students weren’t just learning to use AI but learning to use it well.
They needed to know how to write specific, thoughtful prompts that actually work.
They needed to know how to question what the AI gives them instead of blindly believing it.
They needed to know how to add their own ideas, originality, and creativity to what AI generates.
They needed to understand where AI helps and where it hurts.
They needed to protect their privacy and stay ethical in a digital world.

That’s why I created a resource that does exactly that.
And nothing else I’ve seen out there covers these skills as thoroughly.

What It Is

The resource is an 83-page, flexible curriculum split into seven lessons that you can teach in any order.
Each lesson helps students build essential skills for responsible, creative, and critical AI use:

📢 Communication: how to write clear prompts
🤖 Human-Like: how to see the difference between humans and AI
🧐 Analyze: how to evaluate AI answers for accuracy and bias
🔧 Train: how to guide and refine AI output
🧭 Guidelines: ethical and appropriate use
🔒 Privacy: what not to share and why
💡 Think: how to use AI as a complement, not a crutch

It’s approachable, creative, and helps students see AI as a tool that can amplify their thinking without replacing it.
It also saves you time by giving you ready-made activities, worksheets, and discussion prompts you can use right away.

Why Back-to-School?

Habits form fast.
The way students use AI in the first few weeks of school will likely shape how they use it all year and beyond.

If you wait until November or January to address it, you’re already playing catch-up.
But if you set clear expectations and give them the tools now, you set them, and yourself, up for success.

What You’ll See

When students go through these lessons, you’ll notice:

  1. More thoughtful, creative work that actually sounds like them.
  2. Better questions and more curiosity in class.
  3. Less over-reliance on AI and more critical thinking.
  4. Less anxiety and more confidence about using technology responsibly.

And you’ll feel more confident too, because you’ll know you’re teaching them the skills they really need instead of just hoping they figure it out.
