Creating a vision board gives teens a visual representation of their goals and aspirations. It allows them to brainstorm their dreams, choose meaningful images and words, and create a daily reminder of what they want to achieve. This process not only inspires motivation but also helps teens break down big goals into manageable steps. Vision boards are great because they:

By prompting students to articulate what they already know and identify their interests within the topic, it fosters a personal connection to the subject matter, thus enhancing intrinsic motivation to learn. Real-world applications of can tabs may provoke thoughts on design, sustainability, and engineering, leading to a more nuanced understanding of everyday objects. Encouraging inquiry with open-ended questions such as “I wonder why…” or “What if…” stimulates imaginative thinking and critical analysis. This approach nudges students towards a mindset of exploration and discovery, setting the stage for an interactive lesson where their creativity will be further cultivated through active learning and problem-solving regarding the humble yet intricate world of can tabs. This preparatory reflection primes students to think divergently, inviting them to question, to innovate, and to transcend the ordinary in what might initially seem to be a mundane topic.

Through the analysis of primary sources and creativity criteria, students will be challenged to think critically about what makes an invention truly innovative. They will examine the impact of the pull-tab on the world and consider how they can apply the same criteria to their own ideas.

There are so many ways that your students will learn to enhance their creative thinking by studying the inventor of pull tabs! By inviting Ermal Cleon Fraze into your classroom, you’re not just recounting the past; you’re shaping the future! You’re giving your students the tools to think like inventors, question like scientists, and dream like artists.

If you do a survey in the morning, you can ask the following questions and have the students answer, there is one for each day of the 2 week unit:

1.Have you visited a farm?
2.What is your favorite animal?
3.When did you visit a farm?
4.What can you do at a farm?
5.Have you gone to a farm to pick fruit or vegetables?
6.Do you know anyone who lives on a farm?
7.What kinds of things would you see at a farm?
8.Did you ever watch a cartoon or movie about a farm?
9.If you had a pet cow, what would you name it?
10.Did you enjoy learning about farms and farm animals this week. What is one new thing you learned?

When children enter kindergarten, you see so many kids at different levels in math and reading. This is a great unit to gauge and see where your students are. There are plenty of opportunities for writing, dictating, counting, rhyming, and reading. So many farm animal activities in this pack – it is adorable!

Studying farms is really a great way to connect the world to the classroom. There are so many great activities in my unit and I encourage you to think about it for your first thematic unit. If you would like to have your own copy of this unit, you can purchase it on TpT
